03 July Music in landscapeKathryn Gustafson wonders "What would the music of Moby look like".
- I think I'd like to explore that. What is my design process, currently?- What is my design process, currently?
- Inspiration
-- I tend to draw inspiration from past experiences.
- Conceptual Process
-- I find myself sometimes moving away from my initial idea, but because I am stubborn, I always revert back to at least a modification of my initial inspiration.
-- This can be very constrictive, I need to open myself up to other ideas. - Models
-- I "see" and think better in 3D...though this is very time consuming.
- Drawings
-- My sketching skills suck, I need to develop this in order to be more efficient with time and conceptualization. What have I learned about the design process?-- The design process is iterative and a progression.
-- The conceptual process is fairly spiral...depending on what your concept is, you will need to move back and forth between plan sketches, sketch models, perspective sketches, (wahtever it takes) in order to develp a good sense of if your concept is good. It's important to remember that the method you use in order to clarify and refine your concept will depend on what your concept is.
-- There is no one true design process, whatever works for you is the process you should follow.
-- It's ok to go off on a tangent, you may discover something really cool to use, or you may discover an even better idea.
-- Always question yourself.
-- Try to take a different perspective (prevents you from becoming stagnant and opens you to new ways of thinking.
-- My designs tend to be verbs and not nouns. I don't care to design spaces for just looking at.
-- As homes get smaller and smaller and technology allows us to do more things, I want to move inside to outside. Spaces should reflect culture, currently, but mostly where we are heading in the future. A Design ProcessA Design Process:
1) Find inspiration.
- This can be anything. Visit the site, draw inspiration from objects, materials, elements that you find there.
- Observe who visits and how they use the site.
- Consider how the space will be used.
- Consider what the space could be.
- Past experiences may come to fruition.
- This is the time to explore different possibilities, so play with it! This is your time to go crazy and think outside of the ox.
2) Conceptual Process - Refine your inspiration and develop a concept. Though the line between inspiration and conceptualization is blurred, you will find yourself moving back and forth between the two.
- This is very iterative.
- Continue exploring!
* Your concept must relate to the space.
- Consider seasons and day versus night use.
- How will the space look 5 years, 10, 15, or 30 years from now.
- You may find yourself moving away from your concept, this is ok!
- As you get closer to a defined concept, make sure it is relevant to the space and use of the site.
- Ask yourself "why am I doing this"; "does this need to be here"; "is the space changed if I take this away"
- Design from large to small.
-- The details can come in later.
-- Design in the important elements first (seating area)
3) Build a model. A 3D model is very beneficial in getting spatial sense of your space. And helps others better understand your conept.
4) Final plans (section, elevation, plan, perspective), and any other drawings that will illustrate your point. Presentation model. The drawings and model(s) should each highlight different (crucial) elements and moments of your design. So why am I here?We are entering week 3 of my Career Discovery experience. I figure now is a good time to reflect and consider what I have learned, what I still need to learn and make sure I am tracking to my end goal.
Questions to ask myself and things to consider:
- What have I learned about the design process?
- What is my design process? - What have I learned about how I design? (what works, what does not work)- Do I like Landscape Architecture?
- How do unblock myslef if I get stumped during the design process?
- Do I think I can become a successful Landscape Architect?
- Can you design forward or backwards? |
